“a process through which parties who see different aspects of a problem can constructively explore their differences and search for solutions that go beyond their own limited vision of what is possible”(Gray 1989, p5).

We have found this definition especially insightful in suggesting (1) that collaboration is a process rather than an outcome; (2) that the process of collaboration is only invoked when differences are perceived amongst those involved. We Further, to agree with Wood and Gray that autonomy, although missing from much of the work on collaboration, is essential to understanding how collaborative relationships thrive and fail:

“..for stakeholders retain their independent decision-making in powers and In Business even when they agree to abide by shared rules.. if participants relinquish all autonomy, a different organisational form is created – perhaps a merger,  but not a collaboration.” (1991 p.146)

Beginning with experiences, we adopted an inductive approach (Gill and Johnson 1991) to the development of our thinking, coupled with shared reflections on our here-and-now activity of writing this paper. Our experiences draw on multiple case examples (Mitchell 1983) of consultant collaborations across assignments of varying lengths, with different sizes of consulting teams, in a range of sectors and intervention scenario
